Nestled in the heart of Aiea at 98-020 Kamehameha Hwy, Kapiolani Coffee Shop-Waimalu embodies the quintessential local Hawaiian diner experience, serving up an inviting blend of comfort and tradition. This beloved spot seamlessly marries the warmth of a classic coffee shop with the rich flavors of a soup restaurant, crafting a menu that caters to cravings for hearty, soulful dishes and nostalgic island favorites.
The crown jewel of Kapiolani Coffee Shop is undoubtedly their “Famous” Oxtail Soup. Reviewers often highlight the generous portions of tender oxtail that practically melt in your mouth, swimming in a broth that’s both clear and deeply flavorful, enriched with subtle layers of star anise and the unexpected zest of orange or tangerine rinds. Russ Lacuata describes it as “loaded with oxtail throughout the soup,” while also noting how the broth remains rich yet clean—an ideal balance that invites you to savor each spoonful. Whether ordering the regular or the XL size, this soup stands out as a soul-warming experience, especially when paired with their steamed rice.
But Kapiolani Coffee Shop offers more than just its signature oxtail. The Fried Rice Adobo Omelet and Kim Chee Fried Rice with eggs deliver savory, satisfying bites bursting with local flavor, while dishes like the Pig Feet Soup and Tripe Stew offer adventurous palates a chance to dive into island comfort food with authentic depth. For breakfast lovers, classics like French Toast, Banana Pancakes, and the Bacon & Egg Sandwich provide hearty options to start the day. The Chicken Katsu—served alongside traditional mac salad or drenched in curry sauce—is a crowd-pleaser, showcasing crispy textures paired with creamy, tangy sides.
The ambience frames the food beautifully; stepping inside feels like returning to a vintage Hawaiian diner where generations gather. Don Olkeriil captures this sentiment perfectly, recalling how the setting “reminds me of an old diner-like style” that’s both nostalgic and welcoming. Ouija San echoes this, pointing out the “friendly service” and the familiar comfort of classic local meals like Loco Moco made from “homemade hamburger patties that taste like Auntie made it.” The diner’s atmosphere is both relaxed and familiar, making every visit feel like catching up with old friends over plates of satisfying, lovingly prepared food.
For those craving diversity, the menu does not disappoint. The Kalbi Plate and Beef Steak boast tender, well-marinated meats, with Chee Ryu praising the kalbi’s seasoning and the beef stew’s perfect tenderness paired with hearty vegetables. Even the Garlic Shrimp and Luncheon Meat & Eggs offer flavorful twists on beloved island staples, while the refreshing Tossed Salad and beverages, including Orange Juice and Powerade, round out the meal with balance and variety.
Kapiolani Coffee Shop-Waimalu is more than just a place to eat; it’s a destination for locals and visitors alike to indulge in the rich tapestry of Hawaiian flavors and warm hospitality. Whether you’re craving the deep comfort of oxtail broth or the satisfying crunch of chicken katsu, this coffee shop stands as a reliable beacon of authentic, generous island fare served with a genuine aloha spirit.
Finally, back at Kapiolani Coffee Shop located in the Waimalu Shopping Plaza to try the Oxtail Soup XL. They were loaded with oxtail throughout the soup. The broth was clean but rich although it was a tad bit salty for my taste. Oxtails were nice and tender and there were peanuts in broth as well as maybe orange or tangerine rinds with a hint of star anise. It also came with 4 scoops of rice and the shoyu ginger for dipping. Love the atmosphere here. Very Clean place and they also have a takeout counter too. The price might be steep, but it easily feed two people. Definitely did not disappoint and left feeling satisfied. Definitely coming back to this iconic Coffee Shop. Definitely love nostalgia and Kapiolani Coffee Shop has that feel to it. Help support Local Businesses.
Beef stew was one of the best on island. Beef was tender and the potatoes and carrots were cooked perfectly too. Kalbi was tender and nicely seasoned. Char siu ramen was good - char siu was really tender. Great friendly service.
Saw a review of this place on YouTube and I had to come and try it for myself. To be honest, it did not disappoint. It reminds me of an old diner like style that reminds me of a vintage restaurant. It also reminds me of my family's restaurant back home where most people go for the one special dish. There special dish is their ox tail soup and I can definitely say that it is amazing. Of course this is my opinion, but it has amazing flavor and taste! Would love to bring my family here and most definitely would eat here again. Service was pretty good and the place gets very busy. We had a little wait until we were seated but overall it was worth the wait. Would recommend this place to anyone that would like home style cooked food.
Classic diner with classic local favorites. We try to stop in every few weeks. Their Loco Moco is one of our go to's with it's home made hamburger patties taste like Auntie made it. Order it with fried rice for a bonus boost. Speaking of, the Fried Rice Omelet is ono too. Plenty parking, black coffee, and friendly service. Please go check them out when can.
